My absolute favorite sweet is dark chocolate covered almonds. I’ve tested MANY brands over the years.
Until now, my favorite chocolate covered almonds have been the Sam’s Choice Dark Chocolate Covered Almonds from Walmart. I thought it was a mistake when I first found them at Walmart – I thought Sam’s Choice was a Sam’s Club brand. But then I was hooked! They have the best dark chocolate flavor. Some chocolate almonds have too many extras added and the taste starts to get a little artificial. But that isn’t the case with the Sam’s Club brand.
But then I started having trouble finding the Sam’s Choice dark chocolate covered almonds. One day, in Arkansas, I asked the store employee that was stocking shelves on the candy aisle if he had seen any boxes of dark chocolate almonds arrive. He said, “My wife is obsessed with those chocolate almonds so whenever they do arrive, I buy all of them for her!” Wow!
Recently, we were in Oregon. I had only been to Oregon once before on a cruise. But this time we were needing a grocery store. I usually default to looking for a Walmart or Safeway. But in Oregon, something called Fred Meyer kept popping up. Then when I searched Kroger, it showed me a bunch of Fred Meyer stores. What is this Fred Meyer? Chris and I decided to check it out. First of all, Fred Meyer stores are HUGE. They are known locally as Freddy’s. I think they are bigger than a Super Walmart. We happened to park by the housewares door and I didn’t think we were in the right store. I asked the employee where the grocery store was and she pointed into the store. I didn’t see groceries. Just TONS of housewares. Then I saw a huge clothing section. And each section has a little bit of a different feel – like you are going into another store. When we were in Germany, there was a store called Famila that was like this – one giant store broken down into smaller store-like sections. We finally found the grocery section and it was huge! It has a large natural food section and over where they keep packaged nuts and dried fruits I found some dark chocolate covered almonds. I decided to give them a try.
Oh my goodness, these Fred Meyer dark chocolate covered almonds win! They have a tiny hint of salt on the almonds underneath the chocolate. It is large grains of salt that have a bit of a crunch. Oh they are so good! I actually started to panic – at some point we would have to leave Oregon and I would have to say goodbye to my new favorite chocolate covered almond. We did find some Fred Meyers stores in Washington State, too.
They don’t appear to be a Fred Meyer brand – but maybe that is what the little green leaves are – I am not sure. But if you love dark chocolate covered almonds like I do, get to a Fred Meyer and buy a bunch of these!
And I’ll close with another salty chocolate-y treat from Walmart. The Sam’s Choice Dark Chocolate Caramels with Sea Salt. They are super rich and they are so delicious! And for some reason, I can always find them even when I can’t find the dark chocolate almonds.
