I was talking to my friend MJ the other day while we were shopping (check out her blog to see all the purses she bought!) and the topic of skincare came up. It seems like everyone wants to try this Creme de la Mer that is $125 for just ONE ounce. At one point, I fell into the trap, too. I thought, maybe the more I spend, the better it will work. It turns out I am not alone in these thoughts. Check out my favorite beauty expert Paula Begoun talking about the beauty industry:
I love how she points out that these companies use French names even though they are based in South Carolina or Japan.
Back to La Mer, I have to post her review of the Creme de la Mar product. I have tried talking so many friends out of buying this since I read the review.
I don’t want to post the review here because of copyright, but here is my favorite clip:
It turns out that Creme de la Mer was, and still is, almost exclusively water, thickening agents, and some algae.
Hmmm, all for only $125/oz!
On another note – Paula’s site is amazing. She has great reviews of many products, and if you can’t find a review of what you are looking for, it is probably in her HUGE book.
Then she has her own line of products that I started using in 2001. I started with the 2% BHA lotion back then and now I am hooked on her moisturizers, cleansers and makeup.
I’ve tried a lot of moisturizers in my life and I love that Paula’s are all multi-use. You can use any of her moisturizers on your eye area, eliminating an extra step. Every time I bought eye cream in the past, it got left off and I gave up using it because of the extra step. That is something Paula notes on her site – that the stuff in eye creams isn’t any different than what you put on the rest of the face – they just trick you into spending a lot more on something in a much smaller jar!
Here is my list of faves:
For getting rid of blackheads and helping open clogged pores:
A great all in one cleanser and makeup remover:
Antioxidant serums:
Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serum (I use this one at night because it tends to look a bit greasy)
Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate Serum (I love this one under makeup)
Moisturizers:
Skin Recovery Moisturizer (I have dry skin and I love wearing this in the warm humid months)
Hydrating Treatment Cream (My dry skin starts cracking in the dry months and this saves it!)
A great redness reducer:
Skin Relief Treatment (I used to use it after getting my eyebrows waxed since I was always so red. But I haven’t used it much lately since I’ve been doing the threading I posed about from Vancouver)
Check it out and I hope you get hooked, too! Oh – and an important note – her stuff is not expensive at all!
