We headed back into Denver and had heard that there was a marker on the steps of the State Capitol marking 5,280 feet above Sea Level (One Mile). So we had to check this out and sure enough we found the area around the Capitol was under construction like any government property. So we parked a short walk away and headed over to see if the marker was really there.
The Capitol Building was impressive just as they all are but we were anxious to see the unique feature of this building and as we got closer we couldn’t help but notice the fantastic Gold Dome on the top of the building.
As we approached the steps to the Capitol Building we spotted it! The marker telling us that we were one mile above sea level, we were for sure a mile high in the mile high city.
If you notice there is a horizontal line in the middle of this brass marker and that line marks the exact point where 5,280 feet above Sea Level lies. The fun thing about this is not that it is a Mile above Sea Level but the fact that someone had the idea that marking the one mile point on the capitol would be a good idea.
If you get a chance to visit Denver, be sure to see the Capitol Steps where this marker lies. It was fun, even though it was a quick visit we still enjoyed it.
