We are currently planning some hiking and camping trips for the summer – and it is a lot more work than it seems! Many of the National Park campgrounds book up months out and some open their reservations 23 months out! Who knows they are going on vacation THAT far in advance? Not us!
I went to Google today and saw the Everest graphic (I at least assumed that is what it was) and sure enough that was it. Mount Everest was first ascended on this day in 1953. I think it sounds really amazing and definitely a challenge of a lifetime, but I am not really up for the risk. I am all about unusual and odd adventures, but when the risk of death is that large my decision is to pass. There has been so much controversy on Mount Everest and people just don’t get it – you can’t save someone when it risks losing more people. That is just the chance you take climbing a mountain like Everest. You hear all this talk about climber ethics and how if you pass someone that needs help you should help them. But at that altitude there is only so much you can do after taking care of yourself first. I think if I ever *did* decide to ascend Everest (don’t count on it) I would probably panic when I saw the bodies of others that didn’t make it.
For now, a safe way to view Everest – on your computer!
