So what’s happening to the English Language? I just watched a Nissan commercial where the announcer pronounced Rouge as “Rog”, much like Dog with an “R”. Did we somehow forget what we were taught by our English teachers growing up?
But it doesn’t just stop there, every night our local news casters tell us how someone has “Pleaded” guilty to whatever. But isn’t the word, “Plead” good enough? It’s one of those words that can be past or present tense depending on how you pronounce it. “He plead guilty…” Sure “pleaded” is a word but it just doesn’t sound as intelligent, it’s one of those words that was added to the dictionary because so many people were using it.
What’s another word that irritates me? “Melty”… Seriously, do we really think that this is a word that we should be using? Is this really a word, or did some advertising guy just stick an “ly” on the end of the word “Melt”?
Have you ever heard one of those car commercials where they yell at you the entire time? It seems that the lower the price of the product the more they yell at you during the commercials. (Mercedes doesn’t yell at it’s customers during their commercials.) I’ve also noticed that the dumber the language they use the lower the price of the product. Who uses the word “Melty”?… Taco Bell. Who uses the word “Pleaded”?… Local News (Not CNN, FOX News or any of the national news shows).
Don’t let flunky advertising agencies treat you like an idiot. If they yell at you or “talk stupid” to you, avoid their products. We have to stand up for the English Language!
