I’m going to try to summarize this as much as I can because it could go on for a really long time and I know you have other things to read today. But this all started while on a trip to New York City with our friends Kevin and MJ about a year ago. We were hanging out in their suite (they always book a suite so they have a couch and a comfortable area to hang out) and we were talking about all of the really bad business ideas that we were seeing lately.
Of course this lead to a few jokes about things that people were doing and so on, most of which we will never remember, but then I thought it would be funny to come up with an absurd business of my own. I said something along the lines of, “I’m surprised that there isn’t a restaurant called ‘You’.”, then continued with the slogans, “It’s all about You”, “Make time for You”, etc. I’m sure you can run through an excellently funny list of slogans as well.
But this restaurant needed to be different, so You would never have to dine alone. In fact you could only dine with yourself, because each table would have one chair and it would face a mirror. “You should spend more time with the most important person in the world!” was another slogan after we reach this point in our new restaurant’s evolution. If you showed up with a friend you would be seated at a table with a double mirror dividing you… it soon became even more hysterical and we were not even drinking.
Then on the business side, You would be served your meal and You would pay double because You are having dinner with Yourself. (did you follow that one?)
There could also be a sister restaurant called “Them”, but nobody goes there because that’s where “They” eat. (Extremely low overhead on that business for sure)
We were totally on a roll with this stuff and had a blast with it.
The wait staff would be trained to take orders for the table, and to always make sure to handle any disputes over the check between You and Yourself.
Of course, You would never need a reservation and You would never have to wait on your group to arrive, because this dining experience is all about You.
Ok, I’ll stop because You will probably think of a few for the rest of the day without further encouragement.
To this day we still make random jokes about “You”, but the other night on the way home on the tram here in Vienna, Austria which is an 8 hour flight from where our ridiculous restaurant idea was born…
