The other night I was scrolling ahead on the cable box to see what movies would be on Turner Classic Movies this week. I like to record ones that I’ve always wanted to see or classics that I have seen but don’t own on DVD. Tonight on TCM – Better Off Dead. And that’s not all – it is followed by Ferris Bueller’s Day off and Risky Business. My first thought was “What are these movies doing on TCM?” and then it hit me – it has been about 25 years since these movies came out and they are classics!
Then today I saw a blog post about all of the great movies from the Summer of 1985. I couldn’t believe it – so many of these movies were a major part of my life growing up. I wanted to live *in* these movies.
What I also couldn’t believe is that in 2010, 25 years later, I have only seen one movie in the theater. That movie was Hot Tub Time Machine – and the funny part is it stars John Cusack from the 1985 hit Better Off Dead. In Better Off Dead one of the main lines you hear in the movie is the newspaper boy saying “I want my two dollars!” and that line made a cameo in Hot Tub Time Machine.
I love the theme of many of these movies – rebellion!!!
I want to have a weekend of movies to watch the following (I’ve seen them many times and I could watch them again and again):
Back to the Future (an absolute classic!)
St. Elmo’s Fire (I feel like I know these characters – I have people like every one of them in my life)
Desperately Seeking Susan (I wanted to be Rosanna Arquette’s character)
Better Off Dead (French fries, French dressing, French bread. And to drink….Peru!)
National Lampoon’s European Vacation (In Europe – Ellen Griswold: Clark, you’re on the wrong side of the road. Clark Griswold: Yes I know, honey, I’m also on the wrong side of the car. )
Girls Just Want to Have Fun (Cheesy movie and I loved SJP back then)
The Breakfast Club
The Jewel of the Nile (I wanted to look like Kathleen Turner when I was 31 someday…)
Just one of the Guys (Cheesy but oh so cute movie)
E.T. (another classic!)
The Legend of Billie Jean (Cheesy but good)
Cocoon
The Goonies (this was just on TV the other night)
Teen Wolf
Real Genius
Weird Science
Fletch
Cat’s Eye (This one scared the heck out of me! I saw it late one night on HBO in my room when I was probably too young to be watching it)
Pee Wee’s Big Adventure (oh yeah, you read that right!)
I love Kathleen Turner:
And Madonna and Rosanna Arquette:
