Turning the tables on a hacker

Posted on September 14, 2008September 2, 2018 by Chris

I was telling you not long ago about another site that I have that was hijacked, it received over 80,000 hits in about two hours for various prescription drug traffic that was then forwarded on to a site owned by a guy in Albania. Well, after stopping the attack and getting everything back to normal I was still seeing thousands of blocked hits after all of this time. So being the crafty little webmaster I decided to turn the tables on this hacker and created a site of my own with my own ads for various weight loss drugs and sent all of the traffic over there. I’ll let you know how it all works out.

For those of you that need technical details, I found the pattern in the URL that the hacker was sending traffic to then used a 302 (Moved Permanently) Redirect to send the traffic elsewhere. So all of the Search Engine traffic will update their records to send the traffic to my other site thus removing any spam penalty to the attacked site. In the mean time I can see if the 4000+ hits that I am still getting daily from his efforts will pay off with the various ad campaigns and feed content that I set up on the other domain.

If more people could set something up like this quickly it would help discourage people from trying to hijack sites because the end result would be all of their hard work for someone else’s benefit. So next time your site gets hijacked, get a free domain quickly and set up similar ads and content then send the traffic on to your own site. You may just cash in for your hard work in fending off an attack on your web site!
