This may not apply to many of you but for some reason I just ended up looking at a list of expired domains that are up for auction. At first I was thinking, “I may find something really good for super cheap!” but this list is very, very long and the more I looked at it the more I realized that this is just a list of many people’s failed hopes at making a profitable web site.
Some of the names are pretty good too and I can almost imagine what I would have tried to do with the name if it had been mine…
LittleCycle.com – bicycles for kids, along with protective gear and tips on how to teach them to ride
ModernTrucker.com – a trucker version of Facebook with jokes about “four wheelers” and tips for the road
Pretty-Petals.com – an affiliate site for a national flower chain, and a blog about growing flowers from seed in different regions
SuppliesForBeauty.com – an affiliate site for makeup and maybe a blog full of reviews
DiningSoCal.com – Taking Advantage of the mis-spelling of “Social”,this could be a restaurant review site for Southern California
SpiderDance.net – OK, maybe this one is a little strange…
And all of these names were $40 or less (most of them $29) but what they represent is someone’s attempt at making something they thought was cool and their subsequent failure. I also spotted some that couldn’t make it if they tried like,
QuidditchTournament.com – at $10,000 for you Harry Potter Fans
Licensing for anything having to do with that domain name would put you out of business before you posted the first <head> tag.
Overall there were hundreds of names for sale and the more I looked at the list the more I understood just how hard it is to create a domain and keep it useful as a web site. So for all of you who are still working on your own sites, congratulations to you! All of that hard work you have done over the years is what makes the internet such a fun and diverse place to explore.
To those of you looking to start your own place on the web, there are plenty of names out there ready for a new owner and some of them are available at a pretty good price!
