Hofburg Palace Vienna, Austria

Do not miss out on visiting this palace if you want to see what used to be the beating heart of the Habsburg monarchy. This is where the rulers of the surrounding lands used to reside ever since the Middle Ages until 1918, when the monarchy was abolished. Even today, the palace is the seat of the Austrian president. It also serves as a museum. The entire complex comprises several layers of buildings. The oldest areas date back into the 13th century. It is the 16th to 18th-century expansions that helped give the palace the look it has today though. They include the Leopoldine Wing and the Imperial Chancellery Wing. Today, there are three separate exhibitions that let the visitors imagine what it must have been like to live here in the past: The Imperial Silver Collection, which showcases the Imperial cutlery and decorations, The Sisi Museum, where you can learn more about Austria's most famous Empress and the Imperial Apartments, where you can take a peek into the bedroom of the royal couple. There are also special exhibitions from time to time.
